Jerry has been a fan of Laurie Kay's work in the community and has donated eyes to some of her service projects. We reached out to Laurie when Jerry was developing the Aloha Summer Series of hand painted safety eyes and asked her to collaborate with us on a project packed with Tropical Summer Theme Fun and the Aloha Summer Series Eyes from GlassEyesOnLine. We just received monsters that Laurie made using her new monster sewing kits. View our reveal in the video below. Laurie is the founder of Monsters Made with Love; sewing with a self-love twist. Creating perfectly imperfect fleece monsters that represent what you love about yourself, and even embrace insecurities. Laurie offers workshops with create your own monster kits for kids, people with special needs, mental health and cancer patients. Laurie also works with corporations to bring employees together in an out-of-the-box way, helping people wiggle out of their comfort zone, showing a different side of themselves and feeling a sense of accomplishment. The Monsters Made with Love Philosophy:-There is no mistake we can’t fix or move on from. -You need to make a monster for yourself before you make one to give...you’ve gotta love yourself before you can love anyone else. -Embrace those imperfections, because they make us who we are. I watched Laurie's Video interview detailing the beginning of her idea of Monsters Made With Love and how it has developed and is engaging with her community. If you want to know more about Monsters Made With Love ~ click HERE Laurie also shared some details about the work she is doing in the community with The Maker City, in Knoxville, Tennessee. We learned about Maker Meet In monthly virtual gatherings and workshops being offered free for artists and crafters. The workshops are also recorded for future viewing. It's a free pattern designed by Brenda K. B. Anderson. I substituted the yarn on the list with what I had available at the time. Instead of crocheting the eyes, nose, and flower centers I used 24mm Black Round Button Safety Eyes 26mm Koala Noses turned upsidedown for the Skull Nose. 17mm Yellow Round Button Eyes for the center of the Large Flowers. 22mm Round Craft Discs for Connecting Rings I left the yarn tails from sewing the pieces together and it created movement when the ends of the garland swayed in the breeze on our deck. I found this pattern easy to follow and I was able to build it with short bursts of crochet in limited time periods. We visited my family that lives in the area and met up with Kelice Penney of Careful It Bites at Pike Place Market. After a couple of days in Seattle we started our Cruise to Alaska on the Carnival, Legend, as part of our 25th Anniversary Celebration. We had a wonderful time on the ship and at the Ports of Call. We did have a little side adventure when we missed the boat at one of the Ports of Call; but I'll save that story for another day. We took photographs of nature, wildlife and the creative arts we encountered during our adventures. I plan to use some of these photographs in some of my future product photos. I decided to stretch myself creatively by making a Montage of the photographs and videos we took with our cell phones. Watch the Video below to see our Montage of Videos and Photos of our time on the cruise and at:
I learned how to embed a video within a photograph. I also worked with sound and music even recording my voice explaining a bit about what was being shown in the montage. I could spend months working on this creative project; but packing and shipping orders, photographing products, responding to e-mails and all the other demands of a small creative business are waiting for me so I must give myself a deadline and release my creation with all it's imperfections. Thank you to all of our customers that sent e-mails, cards, and notes of well wishes while we took a break to celebrate our 25 years together.
