That was so much fun and everyone learned new things about our dear friends.
Last January, I went on a mission trip to the Children of Israel Orphanage in Haiti with our church. Members of our church, Ketura and Daniel, were our mission team leaders. It was the first International mission trip for our church and for me. We were very sad to learn recently that Ketura and Daniel would be moving to Minnesota. They were very active in our church and challenged us to give our time and resources to those in need. They brought so much love and joy to our congregation and will be sorely missed.
Last weekend we had a Farewell Drop In Party for Ketura and Daniel to let them know how much we love them and will miss them. I searched on Pinterest for some ideas and was not disappointed to find creative low cost ways to decorate and make the Drop in memorable.
Jerry helped me create the Farewell Banner we hung from the fireplace mantel. Ketura and Daniel were born in Haiti, and have lived in other parts of the United States. I used google images to print maps on paper and Jerry used his Word Perfect program to print the large letters in the center of the page. He used a paper cutter to get the triangle shapes and we hot glued them onto a piece of yarn. We had so much fun making that banner together.
It was a real challenge getting La Caye, where the Children of Israel Orphanage is located in the center of the map for the farewell banner. If you want to learn more about the orphanage click here. If you want to learn more about what we did on the mission trip click here.
I found a vintage suitcase at a thrift store. Another friend from our church helped me clean it and glue the fabric that has a travel theme into the bottom. I glued greeting cards with biblical and travel verses on the inside upper lid of the suitcase. They are driving and will be living in a colder climate so we put munchies for the road, toll money, foot and hand warmers and other goodies in the suitcase.
I set up a table with greeting cards that I found on sale at Michaels and made a sign inviting people to write a farewell note and place it in the suitcase.
Many people from the church brought their favorite finger foods and snacks that were enjoyed by all.
Although it was a drop in farewell; we did have some time to play a little game with guests. I asked people for a fond memory or some other thought they were willing to share with everyone about Ketura and Daniel. I wrote them down and we took a few minutes as a group to read them and have Ketura and Daniel guess who said it.
That was so much fun and everyone learned new things about our dear friends.
It was a bitter sweet Farewell Drop In. We will miss you, Ketura and Daniel; but also share your excitement as you begin your next adventure!
